New draw on Friday
By Håvard Lindheim, 28 July 2004, 11:14

Rosenborg has not yet started its 2nd qualifying round to Champions League, but already on Friday is the draw for the 3rd round.

Yet another time, RBK is seeded - on par with greater clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus and Monaco, but the opponent in the 3rd qualifying round should anyway be tougher than Sheriff Tiraspol.

Most of the potential opponents will, as Rosenborg, have to pass through the 2nd round first. Benfica, FC Basel, Grazer AK, Maccabi Haifa and Banik Ostrava do however enter the qualifications directly in that round.

This means that Rosenborg will face one of the following teams for the 3rd qualifying round:

Winner of Wisla Krakow (Poland) - WIT Georgia Tbilisi (Georgia)
Benfica (Portugal)
FC Basel (Schwitzerland)
Winner of Red Star (Serbia) - Young Boys (Schwitzerland)
Grazer AK (Austria)
Maccabi Haifa (Israel)
Winner of Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukrain) - Pyunik Yerevan (Armenia)
Winner of FC København (Denmark) - Nova Gorica (Slovenia)
Winner of Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Israel) - HJK Helsinki (Finland)
Winner of Ferencvaros (Hungary) - KF Tirana (Albania)
Winner of Dinamo Bucuresti (Romania) - MSK Zilina (Slovakia)
Winner of Hajduk Split (Croatia) - Shelbourne (Ireland)
Winner of Trabzonspor (Turkey) - Skonto Riga (Latvia)
Banik Ostrava (Chzek republic)
Winner of CSKA Moskva (Russia) - Neftchi Baku (Azerbadsjan)
Winner of Djurgården (Sweden) - Kaunas (Litauen)

As you can observe, there is quite some difference in the quality of these teams. Rosenborg's opponents in last season's UEFA cup, Benfica and Red Star, together with Basel, Shakhtar Donetsk and Trabzonspor can all be caracterized as tough.

It is noteworthy that RBK well can face a team from one of the Nordic capitals. FC Copenhagen and Djurgården are both favourites against their oppponents in the second round, and in addition, HJK Helsinki can beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv on a good day.

The draw will take place at noon in the UEFA HQ in Nyon, Schwitzerland.
