"Spaniards played Drillo style"
By Håvard Lindheim, 17 August 2004, 10:35

Christer George is well on his way with the comeback in Rosenborg. The 25-year-old is happy to have finished his stay in Cordoba and Spanish 2nd division.

Saturday, "Georgie" played all 90 minutes of the Norwegian Cup quarter final against Lillestrøm, and if he can continue in the same way, RBK will hopefully get value for the money they payed: In all, the Strømsgodset player had a price tag of €1.3 million when he was bought in 2000.

Last spring, Christer George was more or less regular in Åge Hareide's first 11, but as summer moved on he was benched more often than not. As a result, he accepted an offer from Spanish club Cordoba, who wanted to loan him for the 2003/04 season. The stay in Spain did however not meet the expectations.

Firstly, he had in advance been promised the position as centre forward. Instead, he got to play as a winger on both sides. In addition, the football that was being played wasn't much to boast of.

"It surprised me that the football of Spanish 2nd division was very physical, it lacked the great gameplay and the skills that one could expect in Spain," Georgie says to the official Match Day Programme.

"I well remember my first meeting with Spanish 2nd division football. I had just arrived in Cordoba, and from the bench I noted with some shock that the team used a whole lot of long balls. Then I tought: Have I really left to Spain to play Drillo style football?"

"There are many good players in the Spanish 2nd division, but the gameplay isn't great... The difference between that and their first league is pretty big," Christer George states.

However, the year in Spain wasn't all wasted.

"I developed myself as a person by experiencing something new and different. What more is, I learned the language. I was very busy reading and studying Spanish, in order to learn as much as possible, as fast as possible," the Oslo lad continues.

Christer George has developed as a footballer as well:

"Now, I have a new calmness as a player. I have a far greater knowledge of the football life out there."

Georgie can play both as a midfielder, a winger and a forward, but - as coach Ola By Rise told rosenborg.info this spring - he is most likely to be seen as a midfielder for Rosenborg.

"My wish is to play at the midfield, as a running midfielder," Christer George ends.
