Daniel Braaten has decided not to extend his contract. He can therefore leave Rosenborg for free after the upcoming season.

Shame, he's a good player but you can see why, at his age, he wants to leave. Which league would be best suited to his game?
I'm not sure he could player in the English Premiership right now, he might have to look for a step to an EPL club. |

Maybe the French League 1 or Eredivisie in Holland. |

Sorry for the lack of updates. I'm without an internet connection at the time being.
Braaten: thanks for getting us to the CL in 2004. I wouldn't be surprised if you become the one to take us there this year too. _________________ "Nordens, nei Nord-Europas beste lag" - Dorsin.

A very entertaining player. And certainly extremely good sometimes. But too often he plays quite mediocre. He is often injured as well. I think he will be able to join a club on the second level. But he is not good enough for PL, Bundesliga, Serie A, La liga. Maybe a Benelux club or French Ligue 1 would find him interesting if he is lucky. |

I personally rate the French league very high (higher than the German league for sure), it's very high level of football. Back in my native Belgium I often watched it, and the level of football in France is very good. If he is not having too many injuries though, Braaten has the qualities for it.
Benelux club? Hmmm, knowing the league in my native country, there's no point in moving there. The Norwegian league is not less than the Belgian league, and apart from Ajax and PSV the Dutch league ain't better than the Norwegian league neither. Moving to Benelux would not be improvement for Braaten. If he wants to leave, only leagues like England, Germany, France, Spain, etc would be actual improvement. Otherwise I'd say he's better off with RBK where European football is more or less certain every year (well, apart from that one season...). Also, he has to keep in mind that, unless injuries stop him, with RBK he will play most games from the start ; hopefully he keeps that in mind and changes his mind, it'd be a shame to see him leave. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

That would not be a step forward. If he wants to move forward he has to go abroad. If he stays in Norway, where can he better be than with Norway's best team? _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

The Norway international is out of contract at the end of the year and has attracted interest from England, as well as "at least two French clubs".
Braaten's agent Stig Lillejord told VG: "What I can say is that there is serious interest from England. There are at least two French clubs who are also interested."
Reports in Scandinavia claim that Aston Villa, Bolton, Everton and Fulham are keen on the 25-year-old, with Sammy Lee's Trotters believed to be leading the chase.

Braaten would be suited to the English game but he would have to improve his fitness in order to make the step up. |

Bolton manager Sammy Lee has signed Nantes midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson in a £2.1m deal — but failed to land striker Daniel Braaten.

Hi everybody.
I'm a french fan of RCLens, one of the teams where Braaten is announced this summer and where he had a trial in 2003. I want to know if you have some news about his transfer and if you think Braaten would be a good player for Lens.
Thanks... |

Hibernian manager John Collins has been tracking striker Daniel Braaten but fears the Norwegian international may be out of the club's price range.
"I'm very interested in him but I am sure there will be some very big clubs also watching him," Collins said
"And I'd imagine he'll be outside our radar in terms of wages."

Now Bolton has made a 3m NOK bid for him.
Braaten at his best is an incredible "artist", but he is far too unstable. Since March when he decided not to extend his contract, he mostly has been bad and actually quite lazy; it is irritating to watch such a listless player in tight matches when it is necessary that everyone does his best.
In addition he has done almost nothing to adapt our style of play (classical 4-3-3); our Ivorian international Didier Konan has had bigger progress in 3 months than Braaten has had in 3 years...
I think Braaten best fits a striker position in 4-4-2, and since his Rosenborg days anyways soon are over, I think we should accept the Bolton bid. |

Rosenborg and Bolton have agreed on a 5m NOK transfer fee for Daniel Braaten.
"This is of course a loss, but we have no choice. He would have gone away for free after this season, therefore we can't say no," director of sports Rune Bratseth says.

Hi
I am a Bolton fan and was wondering what Braatens best position is? Can he play with both feet or is he limited to one?
Thanks and good luck in the coming Champions League games

The role of striker suits him best. He is able to dribble with both feet. He is unable to shoot or recieve the ball with any of them. _________________ "Nordens, nei Nord-Europas beste lag" - Dorsin.

He has sadly been suffering far too much from his bad groin(s) - especially the winter and spring of 2006. His left groin is the worst, and the natural left footer has therefore begun using his right foot more and more often both to pass and shoot. He is two-footed in other words, and has played both right and left winger for Rosenborg.
I might sound really negative to Braaten. He is a nice lad, and still kind of a hero after scoring a crucial extra time goal against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League qualifyers in 2004/05. His potential is great, and I really hope he will succeed in the Premier League.
The main reason for my support for selling him, is however that he doesn't fit to our 4-3-3 formation. Instead of going towards the corner flag trying to make a cross ball, he 9 out of 10 times tries to force himself between the side back and the central defender. It looks really good when he succeeds, but far too often he fails.
As said, I think he is best as one of the two strikers in 4-4-2, as he played/plays in Skeid and for Norway. In the good, old 80s and 90s Rosenborg played with classical wingers around the lone striker, and both me and all Norwegian football pundits think finding some new ones will be a giant leap in our "search for ourselves".
PS! Unseeded Rosenborg will get a though draw in the 3rd qualifying round for the Champions League, and we most likely will be knocked out. See you in the UEFA Cup instead - welcome to Trondheim, guys! |

He is very strong, quick and a good dribbler. At his best no one can stop him (take a look at the youtube video posted above), he completely ridiculed Roberto Carlos in one Champions League match. Unfortunately, he is often lazy, playing for himself, and seems generally uninterested in what is going on around him. Moreover, he is unable to cross the ball and lacks goal-scoring abilities. Nonetheless, his talent is beyond doubt and if he gets his mind right he might succeed in Bolton. I won't hold by breath though. |

Danny boy:
"I don't know much about the place, but I do know some of the players and a little bit about the club.
"It seems exciting. Definitely a step up."

According to Braaten's agent, Stig Lillejord, Bolton are seeing Braaten as a striker, not winger. As I said, this should favour Danny.
Former Rosenborg coach, now Norway assistant, Ola By Rise says this on the transfer:
"Daniel fits much better in the attacking play of a 4-4-2 formation, where he can move a bit more freely. I think he prefer one of the two striker positions [in 4-4-2].
"The most important for Daniel is to use his capabilities. He has a tremendous power, low centre of gravity, strength, speed and is clever one-to-one.
"But he still has a bit to go. He still lacks stability. Now as the level gets higher, he has to use his "predator" powers." |
